The Gee-Gees men's hockey team swept their first weekend homestand of the season, defeating RMC and Queen's on consecutive nights at the Minto Sports Complex.
Ottawa topped RMC 5-4 Friday night, and followed that up with a 4-3 win over the Gaels on Saturday.
"Saturday was a different game than Friday, it felt like a playoff game," said Gee-Gees head coach Patrick Grandmaitre. "We really did not like our first period, but our second period was probably our best period of the year. Some undiscipline stuff at the end, but we kept our cool and found a way to win."
The powerplay did the damage against the Paladins, as the Gee-Gees converted on three of their man advantage opportunities. Anthony Poulin, who was leading the team in helpers coming into the weekend series, opened the scoring and added two assists.
The game was tied 4-4 early in the third, when Charles-Antoine Roy scored what would serve as the winner. Poulin and Bradley Chenier earned the assists. Ottawa's defence held RMC to just 20 shots on the evening.
Christian Sbaraglia improved his record to 3-0-0 Saturday evening by stopping 27-of-30 shots he faced.
The first year netminder's most important save was his last. With time winding down and the Gaels pressing for an equalizer, a long point shot found its way through. It partially got through a screened Sbaraglia and rolled out the side of the crease to preserve the win.
Four Gee-Gees found the back of the net Saturday – Bradley Chenier, Grayson Ladd, Nicolas Ouellet and Aaron Brown – continuing the offence-by-committee the team has been enjoying this season.
Ottawa now sits in third place in the OUA East, although they've played more games than most of their Ontario counterparts.
They'll hit the road next week for a rematch with the Gaels, before their first matchup of the year against the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 7:30 p.m. at the Minto Sports Complex.
