
Host Bisons eliminate Saint Mary’s in straight sets
U SPORTS Player of the Year Raya Surinx impressed the hometown crowd with 11 kills and four aces, leading the host and No. 3 Manitoba Bisons to a 3-0 victory (25-22, 25-18, 25-17) over the No. 6 Saint Mary's Huskies, in the third quarterfinal of the 2025 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship on Friday evening in Winnipeg.
Surinx, who was named the most outstanding player of the 2024-25 season on Wednesday evening for the second consecutive year, was a force throughout the night, contributing 17.5 of Manitoba's points. Andi Almonte and Light Uchechukwu each added 10 kills of their own, and combined for 23 digs, while Second Team All-Canadians Julia Arnold and Katreena Bently tallied 12 digs and 35 assists, respectively. Brenna Bedofsky added nine kills with no errors on 14 attempts for a .643 per cent efficiency.
AUS Player of the Year and First Team All-Canadian Emilia Mikanovich had 13 kills and 13 digs, while Breanna Golding contributed nine kills in a losing cause for the Huskies.
Manitoba recorded a .276 hitting percentage in the match, compared to .109 for Saint Mary's.
With the win, the Bisons advance to the semifinal and will play the winner of the last quarterfinal between No. 7 Saskatchewan and two-time defending champion and No. 2 ranked UBC on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. CT. The Huskies will face the loser of that match in Saturday's consolation semifinal at 3 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. CT.
