(SYDNEY, NS) It was too little and too late for the UNB REDS in their 2023 Atlantic University Sport regular season opener against the Cape Breton Capers, on Saturday.
The Capers built a 3-0 lead before the REDS rallied with two late goals.
But that was as close as UNB would get, falling 3-2 to the defending conference champs.
Helen Langrehr (Munich, Ger.), in the 66th minute, and Sophia Maillet (Fredericton, NB), in the 88th, scored for UNB.
The Capers opened the scoring, just 7:45 into the match, on a goal by last season's AUS Rookie of the Year, Grace Hannaford (Enfield, NS).
The reigning AUS MVP, Alliyah Rowe (Kitchener, ON) doubled the Capers lead in the 35th minute and the home side took that 2-0 lead to the half-time break.
Hannaford made it 3-0 Cape Breton with her second of the game in the 55th minute.
A short time later, Julia Dalley (Burlington, ON) and Heidi Lauwerijssen (Kensington, PE) could not capitalize on chances during a scramble in front of the Cape Breton goal. Their shots deflected off Capers defenders. On a second opportunity by Lauwerijssen, a sliding Cape Breton defender stopped the ball on the goal line.
Despite allowing three goals, REDS' keeper Lauren Kelly (Fredericton, NB) made several difficult stops to keep UNB in the game.
The late goals by Langrehr and Maillet made things interesting, but the Capers would prevail.
Up next for the REDS, a date with the STFX X-Women, in Antigonish, on Sunday.
Game time is 1:00pm.
The Capers will play host to Moncton.
The REDS will host the Memorial Sea-Hawks in UNB's home opener on Friday.
