SOCM QF1 : Le gardien substitut fait la différence pour les Carabins réduits à 10 joueurs en quarts

Substitute goalkeeper Olivier Rouleau came up with a big stop as the Montréal Carabins upset the Carleton Ravens in penalty kicks 1-1 (5-4) in the quarterfinal opener of the 2023 U SPORTS men's soccer championships in Sydney, N.S., Thursday morning.

Rouleau, who came in off the bench after Carabins starting 'keeper Jordan Tisseur got a red card in the second half, made the save on the seventh penalty kick on Yusuf Osman, securing the win for Montréal.

Sixth-seeded Montréal opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when captain Quentin Paumier put the ball past Carleton 'keeper Tyler David from just inside the 18-yard box. Both teams had chances to put one more goal on the scoreboard near the end of the first half, but great saves by David and Tisseur kept the score 1-0 for Montréal after the first 45 minutes.

The OUA champions and the third seed in the tournament, the Ravens evened the game at one apiece in the 59th minute after the red card for Tisseur left the Carabins down a man. Rouleau made the save on the ensuing free kick, but could not control the rebound as Daniel Assaf scored on the loose ball.

The Carabins will take on the winner of the match between UBC and StFX tomorrow at 4 p.m. (Atlantic) in the semifinals, while the Ravens will face the loser in a consolation match at 11 a.m.
