Dinos roar into semifinals with high-scoring win over Queen’s
Nate Petrone's 26 points and nine rebounds led the No. 2-seeded Calgary Dinos to a 109-98 win over the No. 7-seeded Queen's Gaels in the third quarterfinal of the 2025 INDOCHINO U SPORTS Men's Final 8, presented by Victory Creative Group, in Vancouver, Thursday. Petrone's 26 points included 11 in the third quarter, when the Canada West champions broke the game open.
The Dinos came out firing, scoring 31 points in the first quarter as they took a six-point lead. The Gaels crept back to cut the margin to 57-55 at halftime. The Gaels tied the game at 57-57 on their first possession of the second half, but the Dinos responded with a 16-0 run and never looked back from there.
In addition to Petrone going just one rebound shy of a double-double, the Dinos got a game-high 27 points from Dylan Lutes, 20 from Aidan Smith with Noah Warton and Declarn Peterson contributing 14 and 10 respectively.
For the Gaels, A.J. Cummings led with 24 points, while Ollie Engen – one day after being named the U SPORTS rookie of the year – scored 20 points. Lucas Ponting added 15 points and Luka Syllas put in 13 for the OUA finalists.
Calgary made 19 three-pointers in the contest, and shot 54 per cent from outside the arc.
With the win, Calgary advances to the national semifinal on Friday a 8 p.m. (Pacific) , where they will take on the winner of the UBC-UPEI game. Queen's will play in a consolation game on Friday at 1 p.m.
