Concordia Stingers edge host UBC in consolation final
The No. 8 seed Concordia Stingers edged out the No. 4 UBC Thunderbirds securing an 87-80 victory in the fifth-place game at the 2025 INDOCHINO U SPORTS Men's Final 8 at War Memorial Gymnasium, Saturday. The RSEQ finalists, led by Alec Phaneuf's stellar performance, showcased their offensive prowess, particularly from beyond the arc, shooting an impressive 50% from three-point range. Phaneuf finished with a game-high 31 points, including seven three-pointers, while Jaheem Joseph added 19 points and four three-pointers.
The Thunderbirds, despite a strong effort, struggled to keep pace with Concordia's sharpshooting. UBC's Gus Goerzen led the team with 17 points, including five three-pointers, and Brendan Sullivan contributed 18 points. However, UBC's 36.1% shooting from three and 42.3% overall from the field weren't enough to overcome Concordia's efficiency.
The game remained tight throughout, with multiple lead changes and ties. Concordia's ability to capitalize on fast-break opportunities and second-chance points proved decisive. The Stingers also dominated the paint, outscoring UBC 24-28, and their bench contributed 14 points compared to UBC's 25.
With the win, Concordia finishes with a 23-8 overall record, and their best finish at the Final 8 since 2007, when they also took fifth spot. UBC, for their part, drops to 26-8 on the year.
