X-Men falter on the road to REDS

Fredericton, NB – The STFX X-Men dropped their second consecutive game on the road, falling 5-2 on Saturday night to the first place UNB REDS.

STFX got out to a 1-0 lead after the first period but then the REDS stormed back and scored four second period goals, making it challenging for X to comeback in the game.

Cole Stewart opened the scoring for the X-Men just 1:53 into the game as he skated down the right wing and beat REDS goaltender Samuel Richard on the short side.

Oliver Peer started the scored for the REDS in the second period as he tallied just at the end of a power play off a rebound at 3:17.

After continued UNB pressure in the STFX end and several key saves by Patrick Leaver, Jax Dubois made it a 2-1 REDS lead when he converted a rebound at 9:56.

Kale McCallum's one-timer from the top of the face-off circle and Emmett Sproule's wrister rounded out the UNB scoring as they outshot the X-Men 16-3 in the second period to take the 4-1 lead.

STFX tried to battle back in the third and pulled Leaver with 3:40 left to try and spark the offense. It resulted in a goal from Ethan Burroughs as he potted a rebound off a shot from Zack Trott while on 6-on-4.

The X-Men ran out time and the REDS added an empty net goal from Camaryn Baber to take the 5-2 victory.

Richard had 17 saves for the win as UNB outshot STFX 40-19. Leaver had 35 saves at the other end for the X-Men.

STFX will be back in action on Wednesday night, January 29^th when they host the Dalhousie Tigers in a 7:00 pm game at the Keating Centre.
