Thunderbirds keep Saint Mary’s at bay in defensive struggle

The forward pair of Mona Berlitz and Jessica Clarke led the No. 5-seeded UBC Thunderbirds to a 55-50 win over the No. 4-seeded Saint Mary's Huskies in the third quarterfinal of the 2025 INDOCHINO U SPORTS Women's Final 8 in Vancouver, Thursday. Berlitz, one day after being named a second-team All-Canadian, led the hosts with 14 points, while Clarke added 13, including four key points during an fourth-quarter run.
While the game started off at a relatively quick pace, with Saint Mary's leading 20-15 after the first period, the defences took hold after that, with UBC outscoring the Huskies 14-5 in the second period to lead 29-20 at the intermission. Saint Mary's cut the gap to 40-38 after three quarters and tied the game early in the fourth. However, UBC went on a 6-0 run, including a pair of buckets by Clarke, to take a 46-40 lead and never looked back.
Olivia Weekes also starred for the Thunderbirds, with a double-double on 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds.
Saint Maryh's was led by the national defensive player of the year, Clara Gascoigne, who had 15 points and five steals.
The Thunderbirds held the Huskies to only 28.6 per cent shooting from the field, and held a 47-38 edge on the glass.
With the win, UBC advances to Saturday's national semifinal, set to tip off at 8 p.m. Saint Mary's will play in a consolation game on Friday at 5 p.m.
