UBC calms Gaels in consolation game
VANCOUVER – The host UBC Thunderbirds rebounded from last night's upset at the hands of UPEI and defeated the No. 7-seed Queen's Gaels 107-98 in the second consolation game at the 2025 INDOCHINO U SPORTS Men's Final 8 at the War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, Friday. Despite the short turnaround from last night's late finish, the Thunderbirds broke the 100-point barrier for the third time this season as they advanced to Saturday's fifth-place game.
The T-Birds pulled away in the first quarter as they went on a 10-0 run midway through the period, and took a 31-24 lead after 10 minutes. They extended that lead to 63-50 at halftime and led by as many as 21 points before Queen's came back to cut the final margin to nine points.
UBC used a balanced attack to get past the Ontario finalists, led by 20 points from Fareed Shittu. Also hitting double figures were Adam Olsen, who had 18 points, Victor Radocaj, who had 15, Nikola Guzina, who had 14, Gua Goerzen who scored 12, and Micah Jessie, who chipped in 11.
Queen's was led by Luka Syllas, who had 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting, while rookie Ollie Engen scored 21. Lucas Ponting chipped in 14 for the Gales, while Kai Dalen had 13.
UBC shot 56.4 per cent from the field, and outrebounded Queen's 54 to 34.
Queen's ends their season with a final record of 22-11 against U SPORTS opposition (16-6 OUA). The T-Birds will close out their season on Saturday in the fifth-place game against Concordia, set for 1 p.m. Pacific time in the War Memorial Gym.
