Huskies clinch playoff spot with 4-3 win over Aigles Bleus

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's goaltender Ben West stopped 39 shots, helping to lead the Huskies to a 4-3 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.

The Huskies had a scoring chance just 10 seconds into the action, as forwards Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) and Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) broke out on a two-on-one, but Gentile rang a shot off the crossbar.

Just under three minutes into regulation, the Huskies opened the scoring as defenceman Will Thompson (Fredericton, NB) fired a slapshot that beat Aigles Bleus goaltender Olivier Adam (Drummondville, QC) to put the Huskies ahead 1-0, 2:47 into the first period.

Just over a minute later, the Aigles Bleus nearly equalized, but forward Charles-Edouard Drouin (St-Georges-de-Beauce, QC) was stopped by Huskies netminder Ben West (Barrie, ON).

Saint Mary's doubled their lead later in the period, with forward Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) taking a pass from linemate Jake Uberti (Toronto, ON) and firing a wrist shot that popped the water bottle over Adam's shoulder. Valade's fifth goal of the season gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead, 15:30 into the first period.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 13-11 through the opening 20 minutes, and took a 2-0 lead into first intermission.

Midway through the second period, Aigles Bleus forward Olivier-Luc Haché (Savoie Landing, NB) was tripped up on a breakaway and awarded a penalty shot, but Ben West stood tall, denying Haché.

With just over four minutes remaining in the period, the Huskies were on a powerplay and scored, as forward Bradey Johnson (Lindsay, ON) fired a shot from a sharp angle that beat Adam, extending the lead to 3-0, 15:55 into the second period.

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 12-8 in the second period, but it was the home team that took a 3-0 lead into second intermission.

But the visitors weren't going down without a fight, scoring three third period goals to make a game of it. First it was forward Yann-Félix Lapointe (Granby, QC) who redirected a shot past West to cut the lead to 3-1, 3:38 into the third period.

Less than four minutes later, Jérémy Michel (Lévis, QC) added another goal to cut the lead to 3-2, 7:03 into the third.

Off the ensuing face-off, the Huskies scored a crucial insurance goal, as U SPORTS leading scorer Derek Gentile played a beautiful cross-ice pass to Allison for the goal, putting Saint Mary's ahead 4-2, 7:22 into the third.

That goal proved to be crucial, as Olivier-Luc Haché redeemed his penalty shot miss with a goal, cutting the Huskies lead to 4-3 with under 10 minutes remaining in the period.

The Aigles Bleus pushed for an equalizer, but West remained solid between the Huskies pipes, shutting the door for the victory.

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 42-29 on the night, with West stopping 39 shots for the win, while Adam made 25 saves in defeat.

Huskies forward Ben Boyd was named Player of the Game with two assists and tremendous forechecking all night long.
