Panthers earn opening day win over Memorial
The Memorial Sea-Hawks faced the UPEI Panthers during their opening weekend, The Seahawks fell short and were defeated by the Panthers 73-57.
ST. JOHN'S, NL—The Memorial Sea-Hawks faced the UPEI Panthers during their opening weekend, The Seahawks fell short and were defeated by the Panthers 73-57.
Memorial Seahawks started off strong winning the tip off, leading into a first quarter that was very back and forth between both sides, defensively both teams showed up. UPei Panthers #33 Deborah Aboagye was first to find the back of the net. Memorial's #8 Rebecka Ekström quickly came back and put the Seahawks on the board. Seahawks were able to stay on top of the Panthers throughout the first quarter with it ending with 12-11 for Memorial.
The second quarter the Panthers came back strong and began to dominate the court. Panthers #11 Lauren Rainford was able to capture a total of 10 points for her team throughout the quarter. Memorial Seahawks as a whole struggled to hit the net but were given many chances to come back through foul shots. However they were unable to come back resulting in the Panthers coming out of the second quarter with a 15 point lead, 37-22.
Seahawks #7 Alana Short led all scorers in the first half with 14 points. Along with #8 Rebecka Ekström putting up 4. For the Panthers, #11 Lauren Rainford came out with 10 points, with #7 Sydney Cummins getting 6 points and #8 Grace Lancaster trailing with 5.
Opening up the 3rdquarter was #7 Alana Short for Memorial and #14 Devon Lawlor for UPei with a 3 pointer each to start it off. Following in their footsteps #14 Laura Murray for Memorial with a 3 pointer for herself. The Panthers continued to lead the Seahawks throughout the quarter finding themselves in an 11 point lead, ending the 3rdwith a score of 54-43 for the Panthers.
Starting off the 4thquarter strong the Panthers #11 Lauren Rainford was able to find the back of the net to continue their lead. Seahawks #7 Short was putting up a fight continuing to hit the net bringing in 7 points throughout the quarter. However the Seahawks were unable to catch up ending the game in a loss of 73-57 for the Panthers.
Top scorer of the game was Memorial's #7 Alana Short getting a total 29 points. #15 Hannah Green was able to capture 13 points for the Seahawks as well. For the Panthers it was #11 Lauren Rainford that lead the scoring with 23 points and #14 Devon Lawler found herself with 11 points.
The Memorial Seahawks will face the Panthers again tomorrow night, Saturday October 28th at 6pm.
