1994 Vanier Cup Game Recap

1994 – Western 50, Saskatchewan 40 (OT)

This Vanier Cup saw a rematch between 1989 Vanier Cup combatants Western Ontario Mustangs and Saskatchewan Huskies. The match-up turned out to be the most exciting game played in the country in 1994. Neither team lacked offence as the Mustangs defeated the Huskies 50-40 in the first and only Vanier Cup to go to overtime.

Trailing 7-0, the Mustangs scored touchdowns on their first three possessions of the game to lead 21-7 at the end of the first quarter. Western added a 26-yard field goal by Frank Jagas on the last play of the half to take a commanding 24-7 lead.

But with a 31-14 score in the third, the Huskie offence went on a roll. Saskatchewan's quarterback Brent Schneider threw for 227 yards during the fourth quarter while completing three touchdown passes to give the Huskies a 37-34 lead with 1:04 remaining in regulation time.

Western received the ball with 59 seconds left to play at their own 30-yard line. Goldie marched his offence down to the Saskatchewan 35 before Frank Jagas kicked the tying field goal from 42 yards out with four ticks left on the clock. In Overtime, the Mustangs claimed the national title when Anthony Lane returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown for a 50-40 victory and their sixth national championship.

The Huskies Brent Schneider became the second member in his family to be awarded the Ted Morris trophy as the game's most valuable player. Val Schneider, Brent's father, won the award when he led Alberta to the Vanier Cup in 1967. Brent broke or tied every Vanier Cup passing record. He completed 36 of 67 passes for 528 yards. Four of these passes went for touchdowns while five were intercepted.
